Soběnov lies at the foot of the 870-metre-high Kohout, the highest peak of the Soběnov Highlands Nature Park, which is also known locally as Slepičí hory. Around the village, the nature park contains remnants of a mixed scree forest.

Nature and Trails

The Soběnov Reservoir is the oldest still-functioning reservoir in South Bohemia. It is accessible year-round, and admission is free. The Údolím Černé educational trail has nine stops, is 3 km long, and leads from the Soběnov Reservoir to the Soběnov hydroelectric power station.

The Slepičí Hory hiking trail descends to the Černá, connects to the Údolím Černé educational trail, and passes via the Soběnov Reservoir and the ruins of Sokolčí Castle. The longest variant of the Paměti Slepičích hor circular trail is 54 km long and connects 17 stops with information boards. The Paměti Slepičích hor cycling route is marked with cycle-tourism trail signs bearing the route logo.

The Sokolčí climbing area features a 25 m high and 70 m wide granite wall for face climbing, crack climbing, and chimney climbing.

Culture and History

The Church of St Nicholas stands in the northern part of Soběnov, near the village square, on elevated ground. It was originally Gothic, was given a Baroque makeover in the mid-17th century, and was repaired in 1853. Its Gothic origins can be recognised in its tower.

The clearly visible remains of Sokolčí Castle lie not far from Soběnov, on a rocky promontory above the Černá stream. From Soběnov, the ruins of the castle can be reached via the road towards Děkanské Skaliny, the turn-off to the U dubu mill, and the green-marked Údolím Černé educational trail.

The Boží muka wayside shrine in Soběnov is a significant urban-planning and landscape-defining element. The shrine itself, but not the plot of land, is protected as a historic monument. The stone Boží muka wayside shrine stands on the south-eastern edge of Soběnov, on the road towards Děkanské Skaliny. The complex of the Holy Virgin Mary in Soběnov is considered an architecturally valuable ensemble.
