Water and Landscape

The dam of the Staňkovský rybník is 18 metres high and is considered the highest pond dam in the Czech Republic. The Staňkovský rybník may have been built by Mikuláš Ruthart between 1551 and 1559 on the former border stream Hostice. It is considered a popular destination for summer recreation, family holidays, fishing and swimming.

Paddleboard and boat rentals are available at the Staňkovský rybník. Rybářství Třeboň operates recreational and sport fishing on the body of water. From Staňkov, the Staňkovský rybník can be reached by car or bicycle.

Nature

The Rašeliniště Pele nature reserve is accessible to the public via a forest path from the Pele settlement. It is a protected peat bog at an early stage of development, lies partly within the cadastral area of Staňkov and is considered unusual within the peat-rich Třeboň Basin.

Rašeliniště Pele contains floating carpets of sphagnum moss with round-leaved sundew (Drosera rotundifolia) and a large population of lesser bladderwort (Utricularia minor). The area provides habitat, among others, for the noble crayfish (Astacus astacus) and the dragonfly species Leucorrhinia rubicunda.

Cycling Routes

Cycling route CT1014 runs from Chlum u Třeboně through Staňkov; there is an opportunity to swim at the Staňkovský rybník. Cycling route CT322 leads from the end of Staňkov towards Smírčí vrch and onward to Dolní pstruhový rybník.

History and Culture

Historical local crafts in Staňkov included pottery, brickmaking, the production of wooden shingles and, in particular, the production of wood tar in several kilns. Since its first edition in 2021, the Na břehu festival has been held regularly every year on the last weekend of July.

The smaller Baroque wayside shrines stand along the road from Staňkov to Chlum u Třeboně. Their pedestal bears the year “1820”, probably carved at a later date; they belong to the type with Tuscan columns.
