Geographical location

Jindřichův Hradec District lies in southeastern Bohemia; its southern border is also the state border with Austria.

Landscape and water

The Třeboň Basin in the district lies at elevations of approximately 400 to 500 metres. The gently flowing Lužnice and Nežárka rivers contribute to extensive marshlands and a significant pond landscape. More than 2,500 fishponds used for fish farming cover approximately 7 percent of the district. Rožmberk is designated as the largest fishpond in the Czech Republic and covers 720 hectares. The Třeboňsko Protected Landscape Area is included on the UNESCO list.

Culture and history

In the 16th century, pond construction expanded considerably under builders such as Štěpánek Netolický and Jakub Krčín of Jelčany. The historic centres of Jindřichův Hradec, Třeboň and Slavonice are designated urban monument reserves. The castle and chateau complex of Jindřichův Hradec is considered the third-largest chateau complex in the Czech Republic. The Jindřichův Hradec District Museum houses Krýza's Crèche, described as the world's largest mechanical nativity scene.

The monastery in Třeboň, Jindřichův Hradec Chateau and Červená Lhota Chateau are listed as national cultural monuments. Červená Lhota offers an English-style park, a boat trip in a rented rowing boat and access to the chateau chapel. The Black Tower at Jindřichův Hradec Chateau can be visited independently and without a guide.

The surrounding area of Jindřichův Hradec District includes Landštejn, Větrov, Starohuťský vrch, Uhliště, Zadní Radlický vrch and Svatý Ondřej. The wider regional surroundings include the Roštejn castle viewpoint [Doupě] and Janštejn.

Nature and activities

The Czech Canada Nature Park covers 18,700 hectares and includes several nature reserves. Czech Canada supports cycling, hiking, excursions and nature walks. Its waters support swimming, fishing and water sports. In winter, there are marked cross-country skiing trails and two drag lifts. Landštejn Castle is a significant landmark in the forested Bohemian-Moravian-Austrian border area. Renaissance Slavonice is highlighted as an architectural feature of Czech Canada.
