Plaveč on the Jevišovka: Rotunda, Lapikus and Trails
Plaveč stretches along both banks of the Jevišovka River. The Plaveč chateau complex includes a Romanesque rotunda, which, together with the river valley and the Lapikus area, defines the distinctive setting of the town.

Culture and History
Plaveč Chateau stands on the site of an earlier castle complex. It is currently used as a retirement home. The branch church in Plaveč is dedicated to Saint Francis Xavier and the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
The rotunda in Plaveč is a late Romanesque building from the first half of the 13th century. It is already mentioned in written records from 1234. In the 1830s, the rotunda was expanded with an Empire-style annex, and a crypt was built beneath it in 1868. It was restored in 2008.
A stone sculpture with four human faces stands on the rotunda’s stone lantern, with the faces looking in the four cardinal directions. The rotunda also contains a tombstone dated 1557 belonging to Mariana Višňovská of Petrovac. An 1487 bell can be seen in the open bell tower. This bell is one of the four oldest bells in the Znojmo District. The rotunda continues to serve liturgical purposes.
Landscape and Nature
Lapikus Castle was probably built in the second half of the 14th century. It is already mentioned as abandoned in 1508. A marked trail leads across a deep ditch carved into the rock to the site of Lapikus Castle.
In the Lapikus area, steep and inaccessible rocky slopes above the Jevišovka provide habitats for rare plant species. Relatively well-preserved natural woodland stands with rare species in the herb layer can be found there. Luzulo beziehungsweise Hercynian oak-hornbeam forests are particularly prominent, transitioning into a form of Carpathian oak-hornbeam forests.
