Merboltice: Hotels and accommodations

Merboltice is a medieval linear village with a village conservation area, marked by the winding Merboltický potok and traditional timber buildings. Merboltice is characterized by its local history, protected landscapes, and sweeping views.

Culture and village character

The Merboltice village conservation area was designated by Decree No. 413/2004 Coll. of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic on June 24, 2004; the decree entered into force on January 1, 2005. The municipality is approximately four kilometers long. Its conservation area encompasses an approximately four-kilometer-long linear village with elongated plots, founded in the Middle Ages under hereditary leasehold law, with farmsteads above the floodplain of the Merboltický potok stream. The farmsteads are situated approximately 50 to 100 meters apart.

Around 15 large timber farmsteads and approximately 70 smaller timber cottages belonging to farmers and craftspeople have been preserved in Merboltice. The village’s axis is formed by the winding Merboltický potok, formerly known as the Triebschbach. Characteristic strips of farmland extend from the large farmsteads to the surrounding ridges, which form the boundary of the municipality.

The Merboltice bell tower has a stone lower section and a wooden upper section; its masonry Gothic section dates from the 14th century. The bell tower houses a small exhibition about the demolished Church of St. Catherine. The bell tower is open on Sundays when the bell is rung at noon.

Nature and landscape

Merboltice lies within the České středohoří Protected Landscape Area. The Kamenná hůra Nature Reserve is located in the cadastral area of Merboltice. Beneath the steep northern slopes of Kamenec are ice caves in which ice remains for most of the year.

A natural monument in the surroundings of Merboltice features a gorge deeply cut into a basalt massif, rapids, rock walls up to 30 meters high, and a small waterfall approximately six meters high.

Trails and viewpoints

A new wooden observation tower has stood on Strážný vrch since 2006; it has been freely open to the public since 2007. Strážný vrch offers sweeping panoramic views of the Krkonoše, Jizera Mountains, and Lusatian Mountains, the Ještěd Ridge, Bohemian Switzerland and Saxon Switzerland, the Elbe Sandstone Mountains with Děčínský Sněžník, nearby Buková hora and other peaks of the České středohoří, including Velké Sedlo and Milešovka, as well as southward views of Říp and the peaks of Kokořínsko and Český ráj.

The historic Röslerova historická naučná stezka educational trail begins in the center of Merboltice at Röslerova statek and ends at the observation tower on Strážný vrch. Kamenec is currently accessible only to experienced hikers.

Events and local character

The Den otevřených podstávkových domů event takes place every year on the last Saturday and Sunday in May. It includes tours of the oldest houses in Merboltice, demonstrations of traditional crafts, and a small market featuring homemade products. The Svatokateřinská pouť pilgrimage takes place every year around November 25. Culinary competitions are organized as part of many social events.
