Gantiadi: Hotels and Accommodation

Culture and History

The ruins of an original three-aisled basilica dating from the first half of the sixth century have been preserved in Gantiadi. Its central nave is significantly wider than the side aisles. On the outside, the central apse is pentagonal, while the side apses are semicircular.

A baptismal font was installed in the northern apse. Twenty amphorae placed upside down were embedded in the bema vault and the conch of the basilica; they date from the sixth century. Archaeological excavations also uncovered 15 Christian burials. The basilica yielded 70 fragments of ornamental marble, including one fragment with a preserved Greek inscription. The temple was built from hewn limestone.

The Khashupsi Fortress is designated as a historical and architectural protected area in Tsandripsh and is located on the left bank of the Khashupse River. The site on the hill covers approximately 10 hectares and has steep slopes on three sides. A fortress wall 8–10 metres high runs along the foot of the hill’s northwestern slope.
