History and Culture
Sukhumi is recorded in historical sources from the 6th century BC under the Georgian name Dioscuria. Dioscuria was an important cultural and commercial centre of the Kingdom of Colchis.
The Abkhazian State Museum in Sukhumi grew out of a local initiative to collect historical and cultural items and was officially opened in the Bishop’s House on 17 May 1917.
Archaeological excavations at Bagrati Castle uncovered household items from the 12th and 13th centuries, as well as Byzantine coins from the 12th century.
Bagrata Castle is a medieval monument dating from the 10th century, located on a steep hill in the northeast of Sokhumi, 500 metres from the sea.
The Mikhailovskaya Embankment is described by the Sukhumi city administration as the oldest street in the town.
Sukhumi has an Abkhaz drama theatre that has been operating since 1930.
Cuisine
Vegetables, fruit and dairy products occupy a prominent place in Abkhazian cuisine.
Abista is a cornmeal porridge served with beans, cheese and meat.
Excursions and Routes
Two thermal mineral water springs are located 4 kilometres north of Sokhumi in the Besleti Gorge.
The Sukhumi Botanical Garden has walking paths and an excursion route through collections that include a 350-year-old Caucasian lime tree, ginkgo trees and the restored water lily Victoria amazonica.
The reconstructed Sukhumi Embankment was opened on 3 July and stretches for 1,920 metres.
There is a bus connection between Sukhum and Sochi.
