Ananuri: Hotels and Accommodation

Culture

Ananuri’s fortified castle complex preserves an upper and a lower fortress, defensive walls, towers, three churches, a bell tower, an octagonal cell, and a water reservoir. The reservoir was built between the 14th and 18th centuries.

The fortress was associated with the feudal Aragwi family and controlled strategic roads. Later, King Erekle II counted it among the seven strongest fortresses in Georgia.

Since 2007, Ananuri has been on UNESCO’s Tentative List. Georgia has thereby identified the site for possible future World Heritage nomination.

Nature

From Ananuri Fortress, the view extends over the Zhinvali Dam and the surrounding forest. The autumn colors are particularly striking.
