Dzegvi: Hotels and Accommodation

Dzegvi lies on the right bank of the Mtkvari at its confluence with the Khekorzi River. History

In the 12th century, Dzegvi was a Catholicos village. Historic roads through Dzegvi connected Lower Kartli with Upper Kartli, as well as the lowlands with the mountains. During Mongol rule, Dzegvi served as a yam, or roadside station.

Culture

The Tsikhedidi complex in Dzegvi includes a tower, a winepress, the Church of the Virgin Mary, a bell tower, and the Church of Theodor. The Dzegvi Trinity Church is a 17th-century monument. Its eastern façade preserves a seven-line inscription in Mkhedruli mentioning Catholicos Nikoloz Amilakhvari; the church was built from well-hewn yellowish-greenish sandstone blocks.

The Bora Church, also known as the Pillar Church, is dated to the 10th century based on its stylistic features. It preserves a monumental conch composition with cherubim and Christ seated on a throne. Its frescoes are dated to the 11th–12th centuries.

The Dzegvi Church of the Virgin Mary dates from the Middle Ages, follows a traditional Georgian cross-shaped ground plan, preserves traces of intricate façade carvings, and contains remnants of interior frescoes. A church in Dzegvi also contains a niche with Greek inscriptions relating to the Crucifixion.

Religious Sites

The Dzegvi Trinity Monastery is an active men’s monastery with a small late-feudal hall church and is located on a wooded hill above the Mtkvari Valley. A visit may include a short walk around the church. The access road is unpaved and rocky. In dry weather, a sedan can reach the monastery if driven slowly. Visitors are advised to dress modestly.

Landscape and Nature

Dzegvi Lake is a low-lying reservoir surrounded by Kartli’s gently rolling hills. The wetlands around the lake attract various bird species and offer opportunities for nature observation. The largely flat terrain around Dzegvi Lake allows for leisurely walks and picnics without special hiking equipment.
