What can you discover at the archabbey?

You can tailor your visit to your interests in architecture, history or the offerings in the herb garden. Individual visitors can explore the archabbey during opening hours with an audio guide; check current visiting times before planning your trip. In the church, the Early Gothic design and its three-aisled layout reflect a long history: it was consecrated in 1224. The cloister acquired its present Late Gothic form through a renovation completed in 1486. The oldest uniformly preserved part of the building complex dates from the early 13th century.

At the herb garden, a program introduces visitors to lavender processing. This includes a visit to the small, clearly presented lavender distillery, where the production of lavender oil, made for centuries, is also explained. A guided interactive program also focuses on medicinal herbs from monastery gardens and their health-promoting and healing properties. Advance registration and an appointment are required for these activities to guarantee participation. Afterwards, at Teaház, you can sample medicinal herbal teas based on recipes from the archabbey’s 1735 recipe book, as well as seasonally available herbal syrups.

How can you combine trails, culture and tastings?

For an active stay, Pannonhalma has three dedicated hiking trails marked with red, blue and green arrows. They lead from Pannonhalma Porta via FƑ tĂ©r, GesztenyĂ©s Horog and TĂłthegy. Along GesztenyĂ©s Horog, 23 panels tell the town’s history, written by town historian dr. ÁbrahĂĄm Imre. The treetop walkway offers another way to combine a section of a trail with a distinctive structure: it opened in 2018, is approximately 80 meters long and reaches 14 meters above the ground at its highest point. Check for possible temporary access restrictions before your visit.

Cycling and regional tastings may also factor into your choice of activities. The cycle path between Pannonhalma and GyƑr runs as far as the buildings of the Pannonhalma Porta visitor center; check current route conditions locally. During a cellar tour at the archabbey winery, visitors can enjoy seated tasting flights of three, five or seven wines, served with freshly baked pogácsa. Check booking arrangements before you arrive. Pannonhalmi Pálinkárium offers distillery tours and tastings by individual advance appointment.

The IllatmĂșzeum adds plants and scents to these themes: alongside five featured plants, it presents seven scents, including incense, musk and rose. These have been used worldwide in perfume-making for thousands of years. Visiting arrangements vary by season; advance booking is required during some periods.

How do you choose suitable accommodation?

When looking for a hotel in Pannonhalma, first consider which visits will shape your stay. The archabbey’s opening hours are relevant, while herb garden activities and individual visits or tastings require advance registration or an appointment. If you want to combine several activities, it may help to factor these requirements into your plans ahead of time.
