Böhönye is home to a German-Hungarian military cemetery. The remains of 2,240 German and Hungarian soldiers are buried there, including more than 300 soldiers of the 1st Mountain Division.

The area around Böhönye was the scene of fierce fighting between Soviet troops and the German army at the end of the Second World War. The cemetery is said to have been established there as one of the central German military cemeteries.
