Paks at a glance

At the Atomenergetikai Múzeum, visitors can try a radiation protection portal, a dosimeter, and a screw-cutting lathe. The Szentlélek Templom on Hősök tere is a Roman Catholic church and an outstanding example of 20th-century organic architecture, designed by Imre Makovecz. Sárgödör tér is a small cellar quarter in the heart of the old town. In the wider region, Lussonium is located in Dunakömlőd.

What can you discover at the Atomenergetikai MĂşzeum?

The museum combines looking and trying things out: visitors can test the radiation protection portal, a dosimeter, and a screw-cutting lathe. They can also learn about numerous pieces of equipment used in the primary and secondary circuits. Those interested in how the technology works can therefore try out individual devices and gain an insight into the equipment used.

Advance registration is required for group visits, and guided tours are available. Keep this in mind when planning a group visit. The permanent exhibition at the Paksi Városi Múzeum, “Paks történetének tanúi,” opened in 1995. Another museum exhibition, Dunatár, explores the relationship between the Danube and people through ten themes.

What can you experience through architecture and local history?

The Szentlélek Templom on Hősök tere is clearly identifiable as a Roman Catholic church and also has special architectural significance: the building was designed by Imre Makovecz and is considered an outstanding example of 20th-century organic architecture. Those interested in architecture can explore it as a distinct cultural highlight alongside the exhibitions at the Paksi Városi Múzeum.

Dunatár focuses on the relationship between the river and everyday life. Its ten themes include sourcing food, floodplain farming, and washing clothes in the Danube. The examples range from the use of the river and its floodplains to a specific everyday activity in the water. This makes the exhibition especially interesting for visitors who want to explore culture not only through buildings but also through ways of life.

Where can you discover wine and regional cuisine?

Sárgödör tér is a small cellar quarter in the heart of Paks’s old town. The plum-pit-shaped square is surrounded by 66 historic wine-press houses. In the center, above the cellars, there is a garden with annual flowers native to Hungary. The wine-press houses and the garden give the square its own character, bringing historic wine production and a planted public space together.

Wine takes center stage at the annual Országos Sillerfesztivál on Sárgödör tér. Visitors can sample Siller wine, Kolbászos vekni, and food and drinks from local producers. The Gastroblues Fesztivál takes place every year in July and combines rock, blues, and jazz concerts with a wine lovers’ gathering and a cooking competition. The two events appeal to different interests: wine and regional products at the Siller Festival, and music and additional activities at Gastroblues.

What other cultural attractions are there in the surrounding region?

From Gárdonyi kilátó, you can enjoy a view of the Danube and four churches in the town of Paks. This viewpoint is a separate destination for visitors who want to take in town views and the river landscape. In the wider region, Lussonium is also located in Dunakömlőd; it is a restored Roman ruin garden. Lussonium was a station on the Pannonian section of the Roman limes along the Danube. Guided tours can be requested from the Városi Múzeum.

To compare other destinations, you can also visit the pages for Németkér, Bikács, Dunaföldvár, and Gerjen.
