Várvölgy lies on the eastern edge of the Keszthely Plateau in the Tátika Group.
Road access is oriented toward Route 7342; via Route 7343, Várvölgy is connected with Keszthely.

The medieval predecessor of Várvölgy, known as Zsid, is documented in the 12th and 13th centuries as a royal estate settlement. The settlement was later associated with Rezi Castle and the Chapter of Győr; this association with Rezi Castle is documented from the early 14th century.
