Lumpėnai was first mentioned in writing in 1536 and first recorded on maps in 1665.
The first school in Lumpėnai opened in 1739 and provided primary education. Classes in Lithuanian began there in 1944; the school remained in operation until 1983.
What traces commemorate the Lietuvininkai?
The old Evangelical Lutheran cemetery in Lumpėnai is no longer in use. Symbolic krikštai mark the resting places of those buried there. Many Lietuvininkai who lived from the late 19th to the early 20th century are buried there. The krikštai and the stories of those buried there are part of the region’s Lietuvininkai heritage.
A monument erected in 2008 in the old cemetery commemorates the parents of Enzys Jagomastas. He came from Lumpėnai and was a publisher, editor and press contributor who was active in public life. He also made a significant contribution to the development of the Lithuanian-language press in Lithuania Minor. The monument and his biography represent two distinct aspects of local history: family remembrance and the work of an important press figure.
