Tylmanowa on the Dunajec: Landscape and Cultural Heritage

Near Tylmanowa, the Dunajec cuts through the landscape, forming two narrow sections of the valley below Kłodne and Wietrznica. The town’s history includes a charter dating from 1336. The 1336 charter documents the history of settlement in Tylmanowa. Another layer of history is visible at Berski Manor House: the neoclassical building dates from 1840, and remnants of its park have been preserved. St. Nicholas Church can also be dated: it was built between 1757 and 1760. Kalwaria Tylmanowska was established on Basta Hill in the 1980s. In the forest on Wietrznice Hill, above the settlement of Rzeki, clear remains of Polish trenches from the September Campaign of 1939 have been preserved.

Historic ensembles of wooden buildings have been preserved on the eastern bank of the Dunajec, including in Króle and Klępy. They form a settlement landscape dating from the second half of the 18th century. Króle is also home to a farmstead more than 150 years old, with a house, granary, stable, and barn preserved in their original condition. The farmstead is privately owned and not open to visitors; you can only view it from the outside.

Near Króle, a binduga—a place where timber was tied into rafts and floated downstream—operated on the Dunajec for several centuries. The pedestrian bridge in the town center tells a different story: in 1979, engineer Stuczek designed it to cross the Dunajec to the settlements of Wybrańce and Górzany. It was built in gratitude to the people of Tylmanowa for helping people hide during the occupation.

Hiking Route 5 passes through Króle and Klępy. This gives you the opportunity to view both settlements in the context of their historic wooden architecture.
