Dzietrzniki: Church, Remembrance and Equestrian Trail
Accommodation in Dzietrzniki
The parish church and the memorials in the cemetery give Dzietrzniki a historical dimension; at the same time, the Wieluń-Jura Equestrian Trail passes through the village. Nearby are the Źródełko Objawienia spring and a Marian tradition associated with the forest.
Dzietrzniki at a glance
The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is built of masonry, has a cruciform plan and three naves, and was built in the Vistula Neo-Gothic style. It is 40 metres long, 22 metres wide and 18 metres high. The Wieluń-Jura Equestrian Trail passes through Dzietrzniki.
What do the church’s floor plan and dimensions tell us?
The dimensions give a sense of the space: at 40 metres, the church is almost twice as long as it is wide; at 18 metres, its height is four metres less than its width. The cruciform shape describes the floor plan, while the three naves describe its layout. The Vistula Neo-Gothic style places the building in an architectural context. Together, its size, floor plan, layout and style offer different insights that go beyond any single measurement.
What historical memorial sites are there?
During the Second World War, the church served as a grain store and ammunition depot. A grave and a monument in the parish cemetery commemorate several periods of conflict: January insurgents from Franciszek Parczewski’s unit who fell in the Battle of Kluski on 22 April 1863; participants in the Polish-Soviet War of 1918–1920; and soldiers and murdered civilians of the Second World War. The memorials thus span the period from the 19th-century uprising to the Second World War and commemorate different groups.
What stories are associated with the forest and spring?
In August 1856, people from the surrounding area gathered in the forests of Dzietrzniki after reports that Franciszka Pęcherz had experienced an apparition of the Virgin Mary in the branches of a tall pine. This account has been passed down as a report.
The Źródełko Objawienia spring is nearby, close to the village of Kałuże, in the Dzietrzniki forest and in the area known as Dolina Objawienia. People from the surrounding area and tourists have been visiting it for decades; the pine tree near the spring is no longer there. Masses are celebrated each year on 3 May and 15 August in a wooden chapel near the site. According to the received account, the place of worship has not been officially recognised by church authorities.
What does the equestrian trail mean for planning?
One described section of the Wieluń-Jura Equestrian Trail leads to a rest stop in Dzietrzniki at Mr Kalemba’s. The group rests there for two hours before continuing on horseback. This time refers to the stop, not the total duration of the equestrian trail. If you plan to visit the spring or the rest stop described, it is advisable to check access in advance.
