Bunzlau at a glance

Bunzlau (Bolesławiec) offers points of interest for culture enthusiasts and for travelers who want to include leisure activities in their visit. The Muzeum Ceramiki has around 6,000 exhibits. A railway viaduct, the town hall and the history of the former town fortifications offer further insight into the town’s architectural history. The Leśny Potok leisure complex includes a swimming area and beach volleyball courts; Wiadukt Plaza skatepark has areas with different designs.

What does Bunzlau tell us about ceramics?

The collection at the Muzeum Ceramiki ranges from the oldest vessel, dating from the 13th century, to contemporary ceramic production. The exhibits include typical bronze products, stamped ceramics and products from the former vocational school for ceramics in Bolesławiec. With around 6,000 exhibits, the collection highlights different types of ceramics and their contexts. If you are particularly interested in the craft, the Muzeum Ceramiki’s Centrum Dawnych Technik Garncarskich complements a museum visit with ceramics workshops.

The workshops are offered in Mini, Midi and Maxi formats. Participants learn and create their own piece. What happens to it afterward depends on the format selected: with Mini, the piece is not taken home; with Midi, it can be taken home unfired. In the Maxi format, it is glazed and fired, then collected later. These differences can help you choose a format if you want to try the production process yourself.

Which buildings and traces of the town’s history stand out?

The Bolesławiec railway viaduct was built between 1844 and 1846. It is 26 meters high, 490 meters long and 8 meters wide. Its dimensions give an idea of the scale of the structure: it is almost half a kilometer long. The town hall features both a historic section and elaborate sculptural decoration. The north wing, with its tower, is the oldest part still standing today and dates to the late 15th century. It is associated with a Saxon-Lusatian thatched-roof tradition.

The portal on the south façade of the town hall forms the entrance to the Wedding Palace. Its extensive decoration includes floral ornaments, arabesques, masks, herms, mascarons and rustication. Warriors’ heads and the coat of arms of the donor, Mayor Paul Hanewald, are also part of the design. Another aspect of the town’s history concerns its fortifications: the town walls were largely destroyed during the Napoleonic Wars. In 1841, it was decided to turn the former fortification grounds into a promenade—a picturesque walking avenue lined with several representative buildings.

What leisure activities are available?

The Leśny Potok leisure complex is located on Jeleniogórska Street and was built around a restored retention reservoir. Its swimming area uses a plant-based biosystem that filters the water without chemicals. The complex also has beach volleyball courts. These activities are quite different: swimming and volleyball are the focus here, while Wiadukt Plaza skatepark offers a range of areas for riding.

The skatepark has a Pro area with jump elements and a so-called “Satelitka,” a fast outer track. There is also an asphalt bowl and an Easy area for less advanced skaters. Skatepark enthusiasts can distinguish between the areas by their specific features, rather than viewing them as one uniform space.
