Jaworzno at a glance

GEOsfera is located in the depression of the former Sadowa Góra Triassic limestone quarry. The Park Gródek Arboretum covers 58.54 hectares of former dolomite quarries belonging to the former Szczakowa cement plant. Zalew Sosina is in the east of the city, in the Pieczyska district. Other natural attractions include the Dolina Żabnika Nature Reserve and the Dobra-Wilkoszyn Protected Landscape Area. Those interested in culture can explore the Muzeum Miasta Jaworzna, the collegiate church and the Rynek.

What nature and geology attractions are there?

At GEOsfera, fossil-bearing Triassic rock layers have been exposed. The remains preserved in them include crinoids, molluscs, cephalopods, fish and a nothosaur. The site offers a direct look at rock layers and fossils, as well as the history of the former quarry. GEOsfera can be reached on PKM Jaworzno city bus route 304, getting off at the “GEOsfera” stop.

The Park Gródek Arboretum features a variety of landscapes: thermophilous dry grasslands, meadows, rocky habitats, wetlands and bodies of water, as well as pine forests and oak-hornbeam forests. A distinctive winding path runs through the Wydra Reservoir. From there, you can view the surroundings from the water. The mix of open spaces, woodland and water gives the park a different focus from the geology-themed GEOsfera.

The Dolina Żabnika Nature Reserve has been protected since June 1996 and covers 42 hectares. It can be reached on foot or by bicycle via the green hiking trail. The Dobra-Wilkoszyn Protected Landscape Area was established to protect rare plants and sulfur-rich water springs. If you want to compare natural attractions, you can visit both a designated nature reserve and a protected landscape area with a specifically stated conservation purpose.

Which trails and water activities suit your trip?

For a cycling trip, there is a black-marked loop around Jaworzno measuring 48.5 kilometres. The red hiking trail is a 58.4-kilometre circular route, starting and ending at PKP Jaworzno Szczakowa railway station. These details can help you choose between a marked cycling loop and a long circular hiking route. Dolina Żabnika can also be reached on foot or by bicycle via the green hiking trail.

Zalew Sosina has a supervised swimming area and pedal boat and kayak rentals. The lake is in the east of Jaworzno, in the Pieczyska district. This makes it possible to combine your stay with swimming or water activities, while GEOsfera and the protected areas offer different points of interest.

Góra Przygoń offers another point of reference: at almost 355 metres above sea level, it is the highest elevation in Jaworzno. From there, you can see the entire city. This is a viewpoint in its own right, alongside the trails and bodies of water that offer other ways to explore.

What can you discover about Jaworzno’s culture?

The Muzeum Miasta Jaworzna collects and exhibits objects of material culture and works of art directly associated with Jaworzno and its region. The first items in the collection included old mining maps and plans acquired from mines. These objects relate to a specific part of the area’s past; the museum also covers other aspects of material culture and art.

The parish of the collegiate church has a history spanning more than 700 years. The church in Jaworzno was elevated to collegiate status in 1997. These facts describe different aspects: the parish’s long history and the church’s later elevation. The Rynek also has a striking shape: it is irregular and unusually triangular. On a culture-focused stay, you can include the museum, church history and the market square’s distinctive layout as different points of interest in your plans.

If you would like to compare other destinations, you can also explore Deutsch-Piekarn, Gliwice, Częstochowa, Katowice, Pszczyna, Bielsko-Biała and Częstochowa County.
