Bodzentyn: Castle, Culture and Hiking Route

Bodzentyn lies in the Świętokrzyskie Mountains, at the foot of the Pasmo Klonowskie and on the Psarka River. Remains of medieval defensive walls have been preserved in the town. The parish church complex includes a late Gothic Triptych of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary dating from around 1508, as well as a Renaissance high altar created for Wawel Cathedral between 1546 and 1550. The Zagroda Czernikiewiczów showcases historic small-town architecture; the picturesque ruins of the castle stand on a hill.

The Triptych of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary connects a specific work of art with the history of its patron: Bishop Jan Konarski commissioned the work around 1508. The Renaissance high altar also has a history that reaches beyond Bodzentyn. It was created for Wawel Cathedral between 1546 and 1550. Both works belong to the parish church complex in Bodzentyn, but they represent different periods and artistic contexts.

The farmstead consists of a dwelling house, farm buildings and a coach house. A wooden courtyard fence encloses the buildings in a unified complex; they are built of fir wood and roofed with shingles. The site is an example of the historic architecture of small towns shaped by agriculture.

The exhibition also focuses on different periods: it reconstructs the living spaces of a multi-generational, middle-class small-town farming family. The first living room, the hall and the utility rooms show interiors from the mid-19th century. The second living room represents a domestic interior from the early 20th century, and the third one the interwar period. This sequence distinguishes different periods of domestic life within a single exhibition.

Bodzentyn Castle is now a picturesque ruin on a hill. Its surviving features include high walls with window openings and a 17th-century red sandstone portal. These visible architectural elements give the town another historical focal point alongside the church, the remains of the defensive walls and the Zagroda.
