Sâmbăta: Wooden Churches, the Holod Depression and Nearby Caves

Sâmbăta is home to a wooden church dating from 1715. It is dedicated to Saint Hierarch Nicholas. The village also has an Orthodox parish church. In the courtyard of this church in the village of Sâmbăta stands a monument to the heroes, erected in 2000.

The commune of Sâmbăta also preserves several wooden churches with different construction dates and features. The wooden church in Copăceni dates from the 17th century, is listed under heritage protection code BH-II-m-A-01138, and was moved to its present location in the second half of the 18th century. Its portal is decorated with interlocking circles and semicircles, ropes, diagonal lines and rosettes.

The wooden church in Ogești was built in 1826. Its interior walls and iconostasis are decorated with glass icons from Nicula. As a historic monument, it is listed under heritage protection code BH-II-m-B-01178. The wooden church in Rotărești dates from 1810 and is listed under heritage protection code BH-II-m-B-01191. The “Sfântul Nicolae” wooden church in Rotărești has a Transylvanian, ship-like design and walls made of oak beams. Its paintings add realistic and humorous touches.

The churches Biserica Vest Sâmbăta, Biserica Rotăreşti, Biserica Ogeşti and Biserica Nouă Ogeşti are located in the immediate vicinity of Sâmbăta. The different dates, heritage protection details, materials and design features make the churches distinct stops within the local cultural landscape. The construction dates thus range from the 17th century to 1826; at the same time, the visible details differ, from portal ornaments and glass icons to oak beams and wall paintings. Historical classification and design are therefore combined differently in each of the churches.

Geographical location

National road DN 76 runs through the commune of Sâmbăta for approximately 7 kilometres. All villages belonging to the commune are connected to the commune seat by paved local roads. County road DJ 767 connects DN 76 near Sâmbăta with Dobrești.

The approximate distance given for DN 76 and the connection via DJ 767 represent two different spatial reference points: one is the route through the commune, while the other is the connection from Sâmbăta to Dobrești. The paved local roads additionally include the associated villages and the commune seat. This makes it possible to consider the interlocal connection and the road information within the commune separately.

Nature

The geographical setting of Sâmbăta includes the Holod Depression, the Pădurea Craiului hills and the Holod River. The caves Peştera Muhuchii, Peştera Şura Uşorilor and Peştera Meziad are located in the wider surroundings of Sâmbăta. Peştera Rece lies in the wider regional surroundings of Sâmbăta. The caves can therefore be distinguished according to their stated spatial level: three are in the wider surroundings, while one is in the wider regional surroundings.
