Tărlungeni: Nature, Culture and Trails in the Ciucaș Mountains

At the foot of the Ciucaș Mountains, a circular trail begins in the village of Tărlungeni, running as a loop between Tărlungeni and Șaua Teslei. The route passes Lacul Tărlung-Săcele and runs through the Cheile Babaruncăi. It reaches its highest point below Vf. Piatra Dudului, at an elevation of 1,368 metres. The lake, gorge and high point make the route comparable through clearly identifiable landscape features. The trail therefore connects different types of terrain within a named circular route, without any single landscape type determining the entire path.

Nature and Character of the Area

The distinctive Piatra Laptelui ridge is located in the municipality of Tărlungeni. The protected Ciucaș area offers visitors the opportunity to observe rare wild animal and plant species, including species considered endemic to the region. During the interwar period, Zizin was classified as a spa resort with thermal springs. The landscape therefore combines a distinctive ridge, a protected natural area and a historically documented spa-resort character.

Several named reference points therefore contribute to the classification of the landscape: the Piatra Laptelui ridge, the Ciucaș area and the natural sections of the circular trail. The route itself names three different stops—Lacul Tărlung-Săcele, Cheile Babaruncăi and Vf. Piatra Dudului—while Zizin is additionally defined by its thermal springs and historical classification.

Culture and History

Two historic monuments belonging to the municipality of Tărlungeni stand in the village of Zizin: the Holy Trinity Church, Biserica Sfânta Treime, was built in the 18th century, while a traditional house dates from the 19th century. The Căsuţa Amintirilor village museum houses archive photographs, elements of traditional national dress and household objects collected from Romanian, Csángó and Roma residents.

The local history of Tărlungeni includes a dispute with Prejmer over the use of the water of the Tărlung River, documented on 4 November 1484. The folk dances currently regarded as representative of Tărlungeni include Călușarul and Boricza. Tărlungeni is part of the historic Șapte Sate and thus of the wider Țara Bârsei; together with the Bran region and Făgăraș and Sibiu, these areas were referred to as “mocănești”.

Preserved tools also point to the region’s everyday history: the hammer-operated fulling mill known as “piua cu ciocane” and the cloth press “teascul de presat dimia”, belonging to the Beșchea family from Tărlungeni, are kept at the Săcele Ethnographic Museum. Zilele Tărlungeniului is indicated as a local celebration or tradition held on the last Sunday in July. The surviving local references thus bring together ecclesiastical architectural history, household objects, water management, dance and crafts.

Regional Connections

RATBV metropolitan line 530 was established between the Gemenii area in Brașov and Pod Zizin in Tărlungeni, running via DJ103B and DJ103A. Access to the fossil site Punctul fosilifer Purcăreni is signposted via county road DJ103A on the Brașov–Tărlungeni–Zizin–Purcăreni route. Thus, the regional context includes both a specific line between Brașov and Tărlungeni and a named road connection to a fossil site in the surrounding area.
