Brebu – Monastery, Roman History and Nature

Brebu highlights specific religious and Roman sites. Brebu Monastery is located on a small plateau between Brebu and Soceni, on the road between Caransebeş and Reşiţa. Viewing the place through its buildings, dates and named landscape features makes it possible to distinguish its cultural and nature-related themes from one another.

When choosing a hotel in Brebu, travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions can serve as separate points of comparison. This practical accommodation question can be considered separately from the religious, Roman and nature-related references associated with the area. In Brebu, these accommodation features remain separate comparison points from the local references to Brebu Monastery, Gura Văii and “Locul fosilifer de la Apadia”; they can be weighted according to travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions, as well as your own financial priorities.

Culture

The church of Brebu Monastery was consecrated on 1 October 1999. In 2000, the church was elevated to the rank of a monastery under the patronage of “Acoperământul Maicii Domnului”. Access to Brebu Monastery is through an oak gate carved in the Maramureș style in 2001 and made by Ioan de la Năneşti.

The “Înălţarea Domnului” Church was built in the Baroque style and is supported by twelve buttresses. The imperial icons on its iconostasis were restored in 2013. The former wooden church of “Sfântul Chiriac Sihastrul” in Brebu was built in 1728 and destroyed by fire during the Austro-Turkish War of 1788.

The dates mark a sequence in the history of construction and use: the construction of the wooden church in 1728 was followed by its destruction in 1788, while the monastery church was not consecrated until 1999 and the church was elevated to a monastery in 2000. You can compare the religious sites according to their architectural form, date of origin and religious dedication. The named styles and the carved gate create different points of emphasis from the surviving information about the former wooden church.

History

The Roman site at Gura Văii lies 3 km northeast of the village of Brebu, at the foot of Dealul Cozlarul and 40 m from the Reşiţa–Caransebeş road. The mansio inn at Gura Văii is considered a Roman construction with two reconstruction phases.

The mansio inn comprises eleven rooms, four of which were heated by a hypocaust system, as well as a basin (natatio) that served as a bath. The Roman construction at Gura Văii has a regular ground plan with side lengths of 19 × 20 m. The Roman mansio is located approximately 2 km from Brebu in the direction of Caransebeş and about 50 m from the Reşiţa–Caransebeş national road.

The old Cozlarul road ran through the municipality of Brebu and once connected Berzovia with Tibiscul.

Nature
