Ostrov: Danube, Nature and Roman History

Culture and History

The Ostrov-Ferma 4 archaeological site contains remains from the Roman period, the late Roman period and the Early Middle Ages. The thermal building at Ostrov-Ferma 4 had a hypocaust heating system, indicating sauna rooms and heated-water pools.

Durostorum was an important Roman fortress and city on the right bank of the Danube between Sucidava and Axiopolis. The Danube island of Păcuiul lui Soare lies 9 km downstream from Ostrov; the Byzantine fortress of Vicina is located on the island.

Dervent Monastery (Crucea de Leac) stands on the site of a Paleo-Christian cemetery, which predates the monastery destroyed in the 11th century. The Dervent Museum of the Dobruja Village is a cultural attraction in the Ostrov municipality.

When organizing historical topics for your trip planning, you can consider chronology, architectural form and geographical context separately. This keeps different periods, structures and places distinct in their respective forms.

Nature

Pădurea Esechioi is a 27.7-hectare botanical and zoological nature reserve. The Pădurea Esechioi Nature Reserve is located on the Oltina Plateau in the Ostrov municipality, south of Lake Bugeac.

Lake Bugeac is a mixed nature reserve and has been designated a Special Protection Area for birds. The lake is connected to the Danube by a weir; the weir regulates the exchange of water.

For planning nature-related activities, you can use the area, protection status and connection to the water as separate criteria for comparison. The three characteristics can be considered alongside the geographical details, without creating a fixed order for your day.

Wine

The Ostrov winery is located in the Ostrov municipality and handles the production, storage and bottling of wine.

Domeniile Ostrov's visitor offerings include premium wine tastings at the wineries in Lipnița and Ostrov.

Introductory courses in the art of wine tasting are organized at the cross-border Centre for Oenology and Viticulture "Terasele Dunării" in the Ostrov municipality.

Viticulture encompasses different formats: the work of the winery, tastings and organized introductory courses. You can compare this information separately with your own interests and the time available.

For your own planning, you can treat cultural history, nature and viticulture as separate areas of focus and then weigh them according to the available travel dates. The topics can be compared independently, without one area of focus having to replace the others.

When comparing hotels in Ostrov, you can check travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions separately on the booking page. The three fields can be considered side by side and adjusted to your own travel plan.
