Seimeni – Nature, Churches and Local History
In the northeastern part of Seimeni, on the right bank of the Danube, lies the Locul fosilifer Movila Banului. It is a paleontological nature reserve and a national protected area in IUCN Category III; at the same time, it is considered the oldest Miocene fossil site discovered in Dobruja.
Seimeni combines paleontological protected areas with distinctive landscape features and historic sites. In addition to the fossil site, islands and a hill stand out as distinct geographical features; churches, a museum, a necropolis, and an ancient site broaden the cultural range of the area.
Nature and Landscape
Locul fosilifer Seimenii Mari is a natural monument and, since 2000, a national protected area within the territory of Comuna Seimeni; it covers 0.50 hectares. Ostrovul Boufasole and Ostrovul Tache are located in the immediate surroundings of Seimeni; both are islands. Dealul Mare is also a hill in the immediate surroundings of Seimeni. Ostrovul Hinog is an island in the vicinity of Seimeni. The designations distinguish between the immediate and wider surroundings without combining these landscape features into a single area. The places mentioned are associated with several focal themes: nature and landscape, including protected areas, islands, and hills, stand alongside sacred architecture, a museum, a necropolis, an ancient site, and the area’s recorded local history.
The landscape features differ in character: protected areas and the natural monument refer to protected or paleontological sites, while islands and hills constitute distinct geographical forms. The cultural information ranges from churches to a museum and necropolis, as well as an ancient site. Local tradition adds a story about the naming of the two villages and identifies Seimenii Mari as the older of the two villages.

Culture and History
The tumular and flat necropolis of Seimeni – Movila Banului (site 36) was established around the prominent Movila Banului hill.
The church in Seimenii Mari is dedicated to Saint George the Great Martyr and was built in 1904 with contributions from local residents. Its floor plan is cross-shaped, and it has three towers. The church stands on the main road between Cernavodă and Hârșova.
The Muzeul de Istorie Axiopolis is a museum in the vicinity of Seimeni. In the wider regional area, Capidava is an ancient site. The immediate surroundings of Seimeni also include Biserica Seimeni, a church, and Capela Cimitirului Ortodox Cernavodă, also a church.
The church, museum, necropolis, and ancient site represent different cultural forms: sacred architecture, a museum, a burial place, and a historic site.
According to local tradition, a group of surviving Seimeni soldiers fled to Dobruja after their army was disbanded, settled where the present-day villages of Seimenii Mari and Seimenii Mici are located, and gave the villages their names. Seimenii Mari is considered the older of the two local villages.
