Lumina – Churches, Canals and the Valea Cogealiei Valley

Lumina is situated on flat terrain on both sides of the Valea Cogealiei Valley. Several waterways, the canal zone and a series of cultural attractions give the area a variety of points of interest.

Geographical setting

The catchment area of the Valea Cogealiei Valley covers approximately 1,900 hectares; the maximum slope is 3 percent. The valley drains into the Poarta Albă–Midia Canal, whose navigable channel borders Lumina. The Valea Neagră Valley crosses the area from northwest to south and carries water year-round.

Remaining natural vegetation grows in small areas along the Valea Neagră Valley and in the Cogealia Marsh. The “Kudos Beach” is also located in the vicinity of Lumina. The “Zoom Beach” is nearby.

Culture and history

The first church in Lumina was built in 1907, taken over by the German population that had left the area as part of the population exchange in 1940, and consecrated in 1941. It belonged to the Protestant denomination.

The Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul in Lumina was built between 1999 and 2009 and consecrated on 14 June 2009. Its floor plan is cross-shaped, with an octagonal tower above the naos. The church has three towers; its solid oak entrance doors were carved in Maramureș.

The first church combines its year of construction, Protestant denomination and the history of its takeover in 1940 with its consecration the following year. The later church is additionally described by its cross-shaped floor plan, octagonal tower, three towers and oak doors carved in Maramureș as specific features.

The “Geamia Lumina” mosque is located in the vicinity of Lumina. The “Expoziţia de Păsări Exotice şi de Decor Constanţa” Museum, the “Muzeul Marinei Române Constanţa” Museum and the “Muzeul de Artă Populară” Museum are also nearby. The “Delfinariu” Zoo and the “Acvariul Constanţa” Zoo are also located in the area.

Places and activities

Parc Central Comuna Lumina is a modern park built by the local administration. It covers 3,400 square metres and was completed in April 2016.

“Zilele Comunei Lumina” refers to a traditional community event; it is described as the ninth edition. The programme for Lumina Community Days 2026 included the “Turul pe două roți” cycling tour at 11:00. The route ran via Primărie, Strada Morii and Strada Mare.
