Techirghiol – Spa resort on the salt lake

Lake Techirghiol is Romania’s largest salt lake by surface area. It is 7,500 metres long, up to 9 metres deep and has a salt content of more than 90 g/l.

Nature

The Lacul Techirghiol Natura 2000 site covers areas in Techirghiol and in the neighbouring municipalities of 23 August, Eforie, Topraisar and Tuzla on the Black Sea coast. It designates the lake as a protected area while also including areas belonging to several municipalities. The municipality details help illustrate the spatial extent without combining the individual places into a single settlement.

History

Techirghiol has been known as a spa resort since 1899; that year, a maritime asylum with beds and facilities for mud baths was inaugurated. The German Church of Techirghiol was completed in 1934. The priest Pieger, who led the German community formed by ethnic Germans from Dobruja, contributed to its construction.

Culture

The wooden church of the Sfânta Maria Monastery in Techirghiol has preserved its complete painted decoration. It was built in the 18th century by the village community of Maiorești in Mureș County; in 1951, it was brought to the Sfânta Maria Monastery in Techirghiol. Its construction history thus links a specific place of origin and a historical period with its later location in Techirghiol.
