Șendreni between Archaeology and the Siret Lowlands

Șendreni is a place where history, waterscapes, and sacred sites exist side by side within a clearly defined local setting. The archaeological sites range from the Hallstatt period to the Early Middle Ages and reveal different historical layers. With Balta Mălina, the Siret, and the church sites, the landscape and religious tradition also emerge as distinct points of reference.

Culture

The archaeological site of Șendreni bears the LMI code GL-I-s-B-02995. The archaeological site of Șendreni includes evidence of Roman settlements as well as settlement remains from the 10th- and 11th-century Migration Period. These two dates alone mark out a broad historical framework for the place.

The Casa lui Secan archaeological site in Șendreni includes settlement remains from the Hallstatt period, the Roman era, and the Early Middle Ages of the Dridu culture. It is located 500 meters northeast of Șendreni on an elevated terrace beside Balta Mălina. The combination of dating, elevated position, and connection to the water gives this site a precise local profile.

Site no. 3 lies on the southeastern edge of Șendreni, in the area of the former SMT, on the shore of Balta Mălina. The site contains settlement remains from the Hallstatt period, the Hellenistic era, and the Roman era. Thus, three different historical references are directly connected at this location with the southeastern edge of the settlement and the shore of Balta Mălina.

Nature

ROSPA0071 Lunca Siretului Inferior is a Natura 2000 site of Community interest and a special protection area for birds. The lowlands of the lower Siret, Lunca Siretului Inferior, extend from the urban area of Mărășești to the village of Șendreni in Galați County. The designation of the protected area and its broad extent therefore describe two different spatial levels.

The archaeological site of Șendreni lies beside the sawmill factory on the left bank of the Siret. This specific reference to the riverbank complements the wider landscape of Lunca Siretului Inferior with a precisely identified location.

Church and Monastery

The Biserica Sf. Arhangheli Mihail și Gavril church is located on Strada Bisericii in Șendreni. Its street address establishes a clear sacred-site reference within the commune.

Near Șendreni, the “Sfântul Mucenic Trifon” Monastery was founded in 2001 on land that had been transferred to the church after the return of former church property. It was established as a place of prayer, piety, and spiritual zeal for salvation. The year of foundation, the transfer of the land, and the spiritual dedication are therefore among the defining details of this monastery site.
