Poiana – Archaeology, the Siret and Village History

Poiana is home to the archaeological site “Situl arheologic de la Poiana – Cetăţuia de la mal, Piroboridava.” Piroboridava comprises a fortified settlement from the Roman era dating from the 1st to the 2nd century AD.

Culture and History

The village’s written records also date back a long way. One of the oldest documents about Poiana dates from 4 July 1522, from the time of Prince Ştefăniţă Voievod. The commune of Poiana is also shown on Dimitrie Cantemir’s map from 1737. The archaeological site, medieval document and historical map each emphasize a different period.

Settlement and Geographical Location

Poiana’s elongated settlement follows the alignment of the houses along the communal road DC72, whose route coincides with the valley in the area of Pleşa. The village of Poiana lies on the ridge of Poiana-Nicoreşti Hill. Another clear point of orientation in the settlement is the intersection of DC73 and DC72, where Poiana is located.

Water and Landscape

The area’s hydrographic network drains via the Siret River; west of Poiana, the Siret enters Galaţi County. The Călimăneşti Reservoir is located on the Siret within the commune of Poiana. It is used for irrigation and electricity generation. The first part of Poiana extends westward from the intersection of DC73 and the Valea Rea valley, along DC73. Roads and Rail

Via road DC72, which joins DC73 and then continues via DC69, the village of Poiana is connected with the villages of Piscu Corbului, Coasta Lupei, Mălureni, Ionăşeşti and Cosmeşti, located along the Siret; there is also an exit to DN24. The commune of Poiana has no direct railway connection. The nearest railway stations are Cosmeşti on the Mărăşeşti–Galaţi line and Berheci on the Tecuci–Bârlad line, each approximately 20 km away. For Poiana, the road corridors, Siret villages, exit to DN24 and the two railway lines mentioned therefore represent distinct transport connections.
