Galaţi County has a tableland relief. Based on elevation, location and relief features, five geomorphological units are distinguished: the Covurlui Plateau, the Tecuci Plain, the Covurlui Plain, the Lower Siret Floodplain and the Lower Prut Floodplain.

Nature

In Galaţi County, the Pădurea Băneasa forest between Băneasa and Roşcani also protects the wild peony found there.

Lake Lacul Zătun is located in the embanked Bădălan area along the Danube and is part of the Lunca Joasă a Prutului Inferior Nature Park. Access to Lacul Zătun is via the E87 Galaţi–Giurgiuleşti road; after crossing the irrigation canal, the paved DJ 251E continues along the Danube flood protection embankment.

Several hills are located in the vicinity of Galaţi: Dealul Cleşeşti, Movila Drăgăicii, Dealul Ţiganca and Dealul Streşineasca.

The recreational area of the Pădurea Gârboavele forest in Galaţi County offers opportunities for walks in nature, picnic and barbecue areas, mountain bike and motocross tracks, as well as an adventure park.

Culture and history

The “Casa Cuza Vodă” Museum in Galaţi is located in the former residence of Alexandru Ioan Cuza and houses memorial collections, decorative art, fine art, old books and a numismatic collection. The Museum of History, Culture and Christian Spirituality of the Lower Danube in Galaţi presents a permanent exhibition with old icons, books, religious objects, paintings and photographs.

The writer’s birthplace, Casa Memorială “Hortensia Papadat Bengescu”, houses the “Personalități iveștene” exhibition with documentary materials and objects associated with the writer and other prominent personalities from Iveşti.

The “Paul Păltănea” History Museum in Galaţi displays artifacts from the Dacian fortress of Piroboridava in Poiana, as well as from the Roman settlement and Roman fort of Tirighina Bărboși. The “Teodor Cincu” History Museum in Tecuci preserves more than 58,250 cultural assets from archaeology, numismatics, medal studies, art, modern and contemporary history, documents and photographs, ethnography, furniture and technology. These include a 1924 EGO 4/14 automobile, considered unique in Romania.

Buciumeni Monastery includes an old church built in 1840 with an altar dating from 1700; the ensemble was declared a historic monument in 1974. Vladimireşti Monastery includes the Izvorul Tămăduirii chapel, built in 1939, and the Adormirea Maicii Domnului church, built in 1941.

Casa Memorială “Costache Negri” is housed in the manor of the Costache Negri family, built at the beginning of the 19th century in the style of a developed Moldavian farmhouse.

Biserica Cudalbi church is located in the vicinity of Galaţi. Biserica Sfânta Paraschiva and Biserica Suhurlui are also located in the vicinity of Galaţi.

Events and regional attractions

At the Festivalul Scrumbiei Dunărene 2026 in Galaţi, there were stalls offering fish, fishery products, preparations made from fresh fish, other food products and traditional products. Gastronomic competitions focusing on fish were also held there.

The Festivalul de Folclor “Doina Covurluiului” is an annual event organized by the “Dunărea de Jos” Cultural Center.

The “Vatra cu Dor” open-air museum in Galaţi County offers traditional workshops for pottery, carpentry, weaving and making reed mats. It also organizes courses in traditional dancing and mask-making, as well as summer camps for children.

Bob & Bike Adrenalina Gârboavele comprises two bobsleigh tracks with a combined length of more than 1.5 km, two cycling tracks – a 2.6 km family track and a 4.3 km competition track –, a 10 m-high climbing tower, playgrounds, pavilions and a large amphitheater for outdoor events.

For the period from 17 to 23 August 2026, the Galaţi County Council planned pleasure cruises on the Danube aboard the passenger ship “CAMELIA”.
