Nature and Landscape

South of Slobozia Oancea lies Balta Maicăş; embankments separate the body of water from the Prut River. Immediately south of the village, the western boundary of the PNLJPI protected area meets DN 26 again. The Oancea stream is 7 km long and runs through a valley with very steep slopes. The nearby surroundings include the hills La Răspântii, Dealul Seaca, Dealul Cartofăriei and Dealul Ariei.

Those who wish to organise the landscape according to different forms can include bodies of water, the stream valley and elevations as separate focuses in their own planning. In this way, different spatial relationships are found side by side around Slobozia Oancea: the embankment-shaped waterside landscape of Balta Maicăş, the distinctive Oancea valley and the named elevations in the nearby surroundings. The edge of the protected area and DN 26 are also part of this geographical context.

Routes and Nature Observation

On the “De la Vlădești la Șovârca” route, the path approaches the Prut River closely after leaving Slobozia Oancea. Birdwatching is possible along the shores of Balta Șovârca on this route. Cycling is possible there on the national road as well as on the embankments and paths around the lakes, but only with permission from the border police.

For planning a day, proximity to the river, birdwatching and cycling can be compared as different focuses without combining them into a single activity. The route connects several landscape features, each perceived differently: the Prut accompanies the path along some sections, birdwatching is the main focus at Balta Șovârca, while cycling remains subject to the specified road, embankment and path sections as well as to the required permission.

History and Churches

Slobozia Oancea was originally called Slobozia Onești. The village probably emerged between 1830 and 1860 as a slobozie on the estate of the boyar Constantin Onu. In 1864, land was allocated to the residents of Slobozia Oancea by Alexandru Ion Cuza and Mihail Kogălniceanu.

The church Biserica Sfântul Ioan Botezătorul is located in the vicinity of Slobozia Oancea. The churches Biserica Sfinţii Arhangeli Mihail şi Gavriil and Biserica Brăneşti are also located in the surrounding area.

The historical context thus ranges from the original name of the village and its probable period of origin to the allocation of land in 1864. The three churches mentioned add specific religious buildings in the nearby and wider surroundings of Slobozia Oancea to this local context.
