Bălan in the Eastern Carpathians: Mountains, Mining History and Festivals

Bălan lies at the foot of Hășmașul Mare in the Eastern Carpathians. Paragliding can be practiced in Bălan; the terrain is accessible to both beginners and experienced pilots. This makes the activity one of the explicitly mentioned options in the mountainous surroundings.

The Muntele Făgetul Rotund mountain, the Fagul Ascuţit peak, the Vârful Stejărişului mountain and the Răchitiş peak are located around Bălan. Bălan's mining heritage is connected with the discovery and extraction of its copper deposit. The systematic exploitation of this copper deposit and the excavation of deep tunnels began in 1803. The mining history therefore encompasses the deposit, extraction, tunnel construction and the regionally renowned purity of the copper produced.

Annual festivals, including Zilele Orașului Bălan, bring locals and visitors together and showcase local crafts and traditional cuisine. The BOTORKA cultural association organizes an International Youth Folk Dance Festival in Bălan every year. The two types of event have different focuses: the town celebrations combine crafts and cuisine, while the BOTORKA festival centers on international folk dance and young people.
