Praid: Salt Massif, Salt Canyon and Culture

Praid can be understood through its connections with salt: the salt massif, the history of mining and the Salt Canyon. The beginnings of salt mining date back to Roman times.

History

Underground salt mining in Praid began in 1762. The Praid salt massif is one of the largest salt deposits in Europe.

It has a diameter of 1.2 to 1.4 kilometres and extends to a depth of 2,700 metres. The salt massif thus brings together geological dimensions and the long history of its use. Both perspectives are part of understanding the place, without describing the same aspect.

Landscape

The Salt Canyon was formed in part because rainwater filled and enlarged the excavations left behind by salt mining. It lies in a valley between lakes and was deepened by the Corund stream.

Halophytes grow among the salt formations of the Salt Canyon, including Salicornia herbacea (Bränca).

Saltwater

The Speleotherapy and Climate Therapy Centre of Salina Praid is located 1,250 metres from the entrance and 120 metres below the Earth's surface.

Praid Saltwater Spa is supplied with salt water pumped up from a depth of 150 metres from the Gh. Doja mine.

Culture

The Áprily-Lajos Memorial House, inaugurated in 1991, provides information about the life and work of the renowned poet and translator, as well as about his childhood spent in Praid.

In the courtyard of the Áprily-Lajos Memorial House stands a monument made from a block of stone, featuring a relief portrait of the poet and a quotation from his work.

Praid's literary side combines biographical information with a visibly designed place of remembrance. Alongside salt mining and the landscape, this creates an independent cultural focus that complements the character of the place with the history of a poet and translator.

Annual Cycle

The International Sarmale Festival in Praid takes place every year on the third weekend of September.
