Mugeni: Medieval Church, Szekler Folk Costume and Nature
Culture and History
Inside the Reformed Church in Mugeni, wall paintings with fragments from the legends of Saint Ladislaus and Saint Margaret, as well as a depiction of the Last Judgment, have been preserved. The church was probably built in the 13th or 14th century and is likely regarded as the most important medieval church of the Seat of Odorhei. If you get to know the village through its church, the pictorial motifs, presumed date of construction and historical classification can be considered separately here.
The exhibition of Szekler folk costumes in Mugeni presents garments from several centuries of Szekler folk costume, as well as handmade textiles and lace. Thus, Mugeni brings together a sacred interior and an exhibition of traditional clothing and handicrafts as distinct cultural points of reference.
The Muzeul Municipal Haaz Rezso Odorheiu Secuiesc is located in the area around Mugeni as a museum. The cultural surroundings also include the monuments Monumentul Eroilor and Statuia lui Orban Balazs, as well as the Mânăstirea Romano-Catolică Odorheiu Secuiesc monastery. The location details clearly distinguish between the sights in Mugeni and the cultural institutions, monuments and monastery in the surrounding area.
The Tatar Spring lies between Mugeni and Dârju. A local legend connects it with defeated Tatars who wanted to block the spring; the spring still exists today. Here, a specific location and a traditional story stand directly alongside each other. The reference to Dârju thus adds to the cultural information relating directly to Mugeni or its immediate surroundings.
Nature and Landscape
Vârful Bonte and Vârful Spre Cetate are peaks in the immediate vicinity of Mugeni. Vârful Spatele Pietrei and Vârful Stejarului are peaks in the area around Mugeni. Vârful Bonte and Vârful Spre Cetate are in the immediate vicinity, while Vârful Spatele Pietrei and Vârful Stejarului are in the area around Mugeni.
Along the riverbank in Mugeni, yellow-bellied toads (Bombina variegata) can be seen and their characteristic “unk-unk” call can be heard. The Natura 2000 site ROSCI0383 Râul Târnava Mare între Odorheiu Secuiesc și Vânători also includes Mugeni in Harghita County. The landscape references thus range from named peaks and the riverbank with the specified animal species to a protected area that includes Mugeni.
Religious References and Route
The “Religion Day” programme includes Mugeni/Bögöz as a stop on its route. A 17.2-kilometre tour leads from Poarta cu Comori (“Kincses Porta”) in Mugeni to Dârjiu. The religious route reference and the numbered tour therefore stand as two separate pieces of information: Mugeni/Bögöz as a station on the one hand, and the connection between Mugeni and Dârjiu with its stated length on the other.
This results in different scales for classifying the offers mentioned: the church and the exhibition are located in Mugeni, several cultural sites are assigned to the surrounding area, while the peaks are distinguished as being in the immediate vicinity or the wider area. The riverbank and Natura 2000 site supplement these location references with natural features without being equated with the cultural stations.
