Roşcani: Ponds, Hills and Wooden Churches

The Pădurea Roșcani Natura 2000 site covers 56 ha and lies within the municipality of Roșcani. It was designated to protect the habitat types of Community interest 62C0* “Ponto-Sarmatian steppes” and 91I0* “Euro-Siberian steppic woodland with Quercus spp.” The two protected habitat types are jointly designated within the 56 ha area.

Pădurea Roșcani is significant because of the abundant presence of Carpinus orientalis. There, the species reaches the northern limit of its natural range in Romania. Before visiting a protected area, current information on paths and applicable rules should be checked.

The DN24 national road is one of the area's spatial features. It crosses the municipality of Roşcani and runs to the east of the municipality. When travelling via a national road, checking current traffic reports is part of the usual preparation. Traffic reports can reveal changes along a planned route.

The municipality's tourist attractions and recreational features include numerous ponds. Together with the wide valleys, they form a distinct landscape aspect alongside the protected habitats of Pădurea Roșcani. The wooden church of Sfântul Gheorghe in Roșcani was built in 1780. Another specific architectural detail is provided by the wooden church in Rădeni–Roșcani: its exterior is plastered with clay and then whitewashed, while the porch is located on the north side. Thus, the two churches differ in their year of construction or in the traditional design and orientation of individual structural elements. Clay plaster, whitewashing and the northern porch define the exterior design of the second church. Current visiting hours for churches can be checked before visiting.

Roşcani Community Day is scheduled for the second week of October. The patronal feast of the Orthodox Church of Sfânta Maria in Roșcani is on 4 August. Event dates should be checked again for the date and time before travelling.

In Roşcani, honey is considered a food and, after fermentation, also a beverage. The municipality is also considered a beekeeping area with more than 800 bee colonies. In Roşcani, beekeeping is regarded as a shared passion across several generations. Honey, fermentation and beekeeping therefore form a local field of interest in which the product and the craft belong together. The subject ranges from the food product and fermented beverage to beekeeping.
