Miclăușeni: Sturdza Castle, Park and Monastery

Culture

Sturdza Castle was built between 1880 and 1904 on the site of an older manor house in the late Gothic style. Its exterior decorations include heraldic elements inspired by the coat of arms of the Sturdza family. The interior furnishings included a central staircase made of Dalmatian marble, intricately carved rosewood furniture, as well as ceilings and walls with oil paintings. Thus, both the architectural history and the design of the exterior and interior areas are central to the castle.

The former private library in Sturdza Castle contained around 60,000 volumes, including incunabula as well as many first editions or very rare editions. The historic book collection adds another distinct area to the late Gothic architecture and the interior furnishings described above. The cultural character of Miclăușeni can therefore be considered separately in terms of its buildings, decorative details, interiors and library.

Nature

The park of the Sturdza estate near Miclăușeni covered 42 hectares and was laid out in the English style with ornamental tree species and numerous flower-lined avenues. The size of the former park, its design and the plant elements mentioned here form a distinct landscape focus.

The forest around Sturdza Castle can be explored on foot by visitors. Thus, in addition to the landscaped park, the paths through the forest are also connected with the castle as distinct landscape areas.

History

Miclăușeni Monastery was re-established in 1994. In the Church of the Annunciation, “Buna Vestire,” at Miclăușeni Monastery, the naos contains a silver cross with fragments of relics from 14 saints. The re-establishment of the monastery and the church’s sacred interior are therefore among the historical and religious themes of the place.

The “Sf. Ilie” socio-cultural center of Miclăușeni Monastery offers accommodation to pilgrims. During the restoration work on Sturdza Castle, Miclăușeni Monastery remains open. These two details describe the monastery both as a socio-cultural center and in connection with the time-limited restoration of the castle.

Experiences

The team-building package includes sports, educational or leisure activities throughout the entire Miclăușeni estate. The “Călătorie la 1900” event was offered annually at the beginning of September as a Belle Époque experience. The two formats therefore differ in their stated types of activities and in the historical character of the event.
