Seini – Fortress, Churches and Trails through Maramureș

Seini lies on the eastern edge of the Someș Plain, where it meets the western foothills of the Gutâi Mountains. On Dealul Comja, a living monument made up of approximately 10,000 fir trees spells the name “Eminescu”; it was created in 1939.

Culture

The medieval fortress of Seini is located on Dealul Cetății in the northeastern part of the town. Its ruins are surrounded by ditches and include a wooden observation tower as well as tables and benches. In front of the Reformed Church stands an obelisk commemorating Erdusy Syilvester Janos.

The Roman Catholic Church is considered the oldest church in the town and dates from 1421. The Reformed, also known as Calvinist, Church dates from 1796. The Jewish synagogue was built in 1904. Casa Bay was built toward the end of the 19th century and is a historic monument.

The religious and architectural history also includes a wooden church built by craftsmen from the historic region of Maramureș. The Church of Sfinții Arhangheli Mihail și Gavril was built between 1879 and 1882 by parish priest Alexiu Berinde and was modernized by his son in the early 1940s. It contains the only stone iconostasis in a Romanian church.

Getting around

Seini is crossed by CFR Main Line 400 on the Brașov–Deda–Dej–Baia Mare–Satu Mare route. For travel within the town, there are approximately 6 km of cycling paths as well as a bike-sharing system with four fixed rental stations. For a day plan, you can consider rail and bicycle as two separate means of transport.

Events and routes

Zilele oraşului Seini is a traditional two-day town festival featuring various cultural events, the celebration of the “Nunților de Aur,” folklore performances, sports competitions and open-air concerts. A two-day international off-road competition takes place at the beginning of May in the Carierei Seini area and on wooded hills.

The Drumul Maramureșului includes a Seini–Țara Codrului route with a stated length of 170 km and a duration of nine days. The two event formats and the nine-day route can be incorporated separately into your own planning by timing and activity type.

The two event formats differ from the route in terms of duration: the town festival and the off-road competition each last two days, while the Drumul Maramureșului is stated to take nine days. Thus, a festival, a competition and a multi-day route are presented as separate formats.

There is no tourist marking for access to Dealul Comja from Racșa; from Seini, however, there are markings in the Seinel Valley and via Dealul Cetății Seini.
