Godeanu: Karst Landscape, Wooden Churches and TopolniČa
Godeanu is located in the MehedinČi Mountains in the upper reaches of the TopolniČa River, which locals also call Valea Mare.
Nature
One of the most interesting attractions in the Godeanu commune is its karst landscape, with limestone pavements, sinkholes, valleys, poljes, gorges and, above all, caves. The TopolniČa River is the most important waterway in the Godeanu commune and the wider MehedinČi Plateau region. PeČtera TopolniČei is also known among locals as PeČtera de la Prosac and is located west of the village of Marga. The cave contains stalactite and stalagmite formations, and rare bat species live there. The communes of CireČu and Godeanu are involved in the protection of PeČtera TopolniČa and the TopolniČa Gorge.
The TopolniČa Gorge stretches for approximately four kilometres. Hiking trails run through the TopolniČa Gorge and are accessible to anyone interested in exploring the area. A tourist route between Godeanu and CireČu leads to Gaura lui Ciocârdie in about 20 minutes. Chiciora Peak (Godeanu) reaches an elevation of 722.6 metres. On Dealul Chiciora near Godeanu stands the 35-metre-high Crucea de la Godeanu, a local landmark.

Culture and History
The language, traditional dress and customs in Godeanu are identical to those of the Mountain Banat region. The wooden church of âSfântul Dimitrieâ stands in the centre of Godeanu village. The wooden church of âSf. Voievoziâ was brought to Godeanu from ObârČia CloČani in October 1946; its original beams and the icons of the iconostasis were preserved during the relocation.
Cetatea GrÄdeČului fortress is located on GrÄdeČ Hill, at the confluence of the StilbiČa stream and the TopolniČa River. Situated south of PÄuneČti, it dates from the time of the Dacians. The âElena Gruiescuâ wooden house in Godeanu village dates from 1918. The Ciumarca of Godeanu takes place every year; this feast day was introduced by Cuviosul Nicodim cel SfinČit de la Tismana. The Ciumarca procession leads from the foot of Dealul Chiciora to its summit.
