Gura Văii in Mehedinți – Archaeology, Danube and Trails
In Gura Văii in Mehedinți lies the Gura Văii–Ostrovul Banului archaeological site on Ostrovul Banului, south of Gura Văii, approximately 1 km downstream from the Porțile de Fier I dam. The site is a multi-layered archaeological site with settlement levels dating from the Mesolithic to the Middle Ages.
Gura Văii is connected in an east-west direction by national road DN6. From Gura Văii, the road crosses the Porțile de Fier dam towards Belgrade.
Culture
The Porțile de Fier I Hydroelectric Power Plant Museum opened in 1976, four years after the inauguration of the Porțile de Fier I hydroelectric and navigation system on 16 May 1972. Settlement remains from the Mesolithic, Neolithic, Early Iron Age, as well as the Dacian, Roman, Romano-Byzantine and pre-feudal periods have been identified on Ostrovul Banului near Gura Văii.
At the museum, you can see historical and ethnographic objects from the Iron Gates region, as well as exhibits about the construction of the hydropower plant on the Danube. The visit ends in the turbine hall, where six Kaplan turbines can be viewed. Archaeology and the history of technology stand side by side as two distinct cultural perspectives.
Nature
The Gura Văii–Vârciorova nature reserve is located near Gura Văii on the left bank of the Danube, as well as in the Getic Plateau and the Almăj and Locvei Mountains. It is a floristic and forestry reserve covering 305 hectares. It protects forests with a diverse plant composition and numerous rare species.

Hiking
The excursion destination “Crucea Sfântului Cuvios Petru” is located on Dealul Crucii near Gura Văii. It cannot be reached directly by car; the quickest access begins at a point on national road DN6 and includes a fairly steep ascent of approximately 30 to 45 minutes.
