Olt: Cultural History, Historic Sites and Nature

Olt can be explored through specific cultural and historical themes at the Olt County Museum. It was founded in 1952 and preserves more than 25,000 objects relating to the culture and civilization of Olt. It is housed in the former administrative palace, a historic monument built in 1887. The permanent exhibition on the history and culture of Slatina opened on April 20, 2000. Another permanent exhibition of contemporary art by Ion Popescu-Negreni opened on July 8, 1999. The ethnographic collections of the Olt County Museum include Vădastra sheepskin coats, Oltenian carpets, ceramics from Oboga, Corbeni and Româna, as well as decorated eggs from Oboga.

Rural History

The “Traian Zorzoliu” Museum of the Boian Plain is housed in the buildings of the Polihronie Ioan manor. Among other things, it includes a wooden church, a farmhouse and an earth cellar, as well as a forge, a pottery kiln and a Neolithic Gumelnița village with five huts. Telephone registration is required for weekend visits to the “Traian Zorzoliu” Museum of the Boian Plain.

Archaeology and the Danube

The Corabia Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography was founded in 1951. Its exhibition is divided into the areas of folk art and ancient history. Boats depart from Corabia’s tourist harbor for trips on the Danube.

Historic Sites

Brâncoveni is located on DN 64, 20 kilometers north of Caracal in the direction of Drăgășani. The Sfânta Mănăstire Brâncoveni monastery is a tourist attraction in Brâncoveni. The Roman-Byzantine fortress of Sucidava dates from the period between the 3rd and 6th centuries AD. The museum at the entrance to the Sucidava archaeological complex displays objects from the Vădastra culture dating from the 4th millennium BC and from the Celei cultural group dating from the second half of the 3rd millennium BC. The medieval tower of Hotărani bears a Greek inscription dating its construction to 1520. The Hotărani church was built in 1588 on the ruins of a Roman settlement referred to as a suburb of the ancient city of Romula. The Nicolae Titulescu Memorial House was the summer residence of the family of the Romanian diplomat Nicolae Titulescu.

Nature

Pădurea Topana is a 120-hectare forest reserve in the north of Olt County on the Cotmeana Plateau. Pădurea Topana includes pedunculate oaks, Turkey oaks, sessile oaks and Hungarian oaks. Animals found in Pădurea Topana include rabbits, foxes, badgers, European ground squirrels and wild boars.
