Bixad: Monastery, Springs and Piatra Bixadului

Piatra Bixadului is a natural attraction for hikers and nature enthusiasts. The rock consists of monolithic andesite and is part of an extrusive volcanic dome in the OaÈ™ Mountains. The route to Piatra Bixadului begins in Bixad at the turnoff to Bixad Monastery and leads through forests and meadows. The rocky area at Piatra Bixadului can be particularly dangerous when wet. The route and destination area offer different points of reference for planning your day according to your personal preferences.

Culture

The church of Bixad Monastery is dedicated to the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul; it was built from 1769 onward and consecrated in 1771. The miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary was brought to Bixad in 1853. In the monastery church, this icon attracts believers from the neighboring counties of Bihor, Sălaj, Maramureș and Bistrița-Năsăud.

Every year, a pilgrimage takes place at Bixad Monastery on 15 August. The traditional custom „Mersul în procesie“ is practiced in Bixad on the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The church „NaÈ™terea Maicii Domnului“ in Bixad bears the designation SM-II-m-B-05267 and is dated to 1881. Next to the town hall in the center of the municipality of Bixad stands the traditional mushroom-shaped structure Ciupercă „Ciuperca din Borcut“.

For a travel group with different preferences, nature and trails, religious traditions, festival culture, mineral springs and archaeological history can be considered as separate areas of focus. The first edition of the „DanÈ›u’ la Ciupercă“ festival took place in Bixad and attracted not only locals and cultural figures but also tourists. The „DanÈ›u’ la Ciupercă“ project comprised five months of OÈ™enesc dances held on Sundays and public holidays in Bixad.

History

In the vicinity of Bixad lies the fortified earthwork of Belavar in the „Coasta BoineÈ™tilor“ area. It dates from the Late Bronze Age, approximately from the period between 1150 and 950/900 BC, and shows evidence of further settlement in later periods. In the same area, the ruins of Belavar Fortress can be explored by history and hiking enthusiasts via routes from BoineÈ™ti or CălineÈ™ti-OaÈ™.

Springs and spa history

The mineral springs are traditionally referred to by locals as „borcut“ and are known for their therapeutic properties. The mineral water bottled in Bixad was exported and marketed throughout Europe. The former spa operation at Băile Bixad has ended; the baths have been closed.
