Sadu – Church, Energy Museum and Mountain Landscape

Sadu lies in a valley surrounded by mountain ridges on the banks of the Sadu River. For planning purposes, the landscape, religious buildings, crafts and energy history can be considered as separate themes. It is precisely these different aspects that give the place a clear structure in terms of content, without prescribing a fixed daily schedule.

Culture and History

The wooden parish church of Sadu II, dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God, is classified as a Category B historic monument. The icons on the iconostasis of the wooden church are painted in oil on wood, date from the late 19th century and bear the signature of the painter Ioan Boicean. A piece of wood set into the altar bears the church’s engraved consecration date: 1830.

The Biserica Adormirea Maicii Domnului de la Sadu bears monument protection code SB-II-a-A-12531. Its nave has a vaulting system consisting of three domes: two flattened domes and a central hemispherical dome on pendentives. It is one of the first Romanian masonry churches of the 18th century. The Sadu I Energy Museum opened on 19 September 1996 in the main building of the Sadu I small hydropower plant. The three halls of the Sadu I Energy Museum display objects relating to the history of the Sadu I power plant. Groups of at least 7–8 people need to submit a request for visit authorization to visit the Sadu I Energy Museum. This organizational note accompanies the exhibition’s technical focus.

Nature and Trails

The trail from Sadu to Vârful Măgura Cisnădiei passes through wooded areas and alpine meadows. A municipal mountain-bike route starts in Sadu, passes through several stations to Vârful Măgura Cisnădiei and ends back in Sadu. For planning purposes, the two routes can be compared as different types of activity.

Traditions and Crafts

Pastoral customs are preserved in Sadu; in May, for example, around the feast of Saints Constantine and Elena, the herds are driven up into the mountains. Sadu also has several workshops for blacksmithing, woodworking, the production of traditional costumes and weaving. A well-known festival takes place in Sadu every year at Pentecost. For scheduling purposes, the May custom and the Pentecost festival therefore stand alongside each other as different occasions, while the workshops provide a separate connection to traditional crafts.
