Rusciori – History, Church and Cycling Route

Rusciori was first mentioned around the year 1380 under the name vila Rutenica. The history of the village therefore reaches back to earlier centuries, as do the surviving references to its church, settlement and historical events.

History

The Roman settlement of Rusciori lies 2 km west of the village on a plateau on the slope of the Secașelor. It is dated to the 2nd to 3rd century AD. The site therefore combines a clearly identified location with a date from the Roman era; the two details describe different historical levels.

The Evangelical Church of Rusciori is dated to the period from the 13th to the 16th century. Its altar dates from 1734, and one of its three bells dates from 1742. As a historic monument, the Evangelical Church of Rusciori is listed under LMI code SB-II-m-B-12528. Several dates can therefore be considered alongside one another at the church: the dating of the building, the altar and one of the bells each relate to their own historical context.

Rusciori was completely burned down during a Turkish invasion in 1494. The first mention around 1380, this event in 1494 and the later-dated components of the Evangelical Church form a chronological sequence through which the history of the village can be traced over several centuries.

Landscape

The Rusciorului Valley, also called Valea Săpunului, runs through the centre of Rusciori.

Cycling Route

The “Drumul Sării – Țara Secașelor” cycling route runs through Rusciori along the Sibiu – Ocna Sibiului – Topârcea – Ludoș – Apoldu de Jos – Amnaș – Mag – Rusciori – Sibiu route; it can also be ridden in the opposite direction. When planning your own trip, the designated route through the village and the option of travelling in the opposite direction should be considered as separate details for Rusciori on this route. The sequence of villages can thus be treated as a separate planning aspect alongside the decision about the direction of travel.

Transport

From 1 December 2025, metropolitan bus route 530 was scheduled to connect Rusciori with Marquardt via DJ143B and E81 and then continue as route 24 to Andrei Șaguna Street.

Events

A Christmas carol concert for St Nicholas Day was announced in Rusciori for 6 December 2024. The Rusciori school choir and the Doruri Sibiene folk ensemble took part in a Christmas tree celebration featuring a Christmas carol programme.
