How do the Danube and the landscape shape the town?

Surduk developed along Dunavska ulica. The road follows a dry loess valley that slopes down towards the bed of the Danube. This describes the landscape along the town: a valley leading towards the river, and a high Danube bank that has a distinct role in archaeological accounts.

The Marina site lies on a high bank that is continually being undercut by the Danube. The river and the bank are therefore not just part of the site's landscape; river erosion is a defining feature of this location. There is also a memorial obelisk on Gradina, overlooking the opposite Danube bank and the Banat plain.

What historic places and archaeological sites are there?

Marina and Gradina (Rittium) represent different archaeological contexts. Marina is a multi-layered settlement from the Eneolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age. Here, “multi-layered” refers to the different periods listed. Gradina (Rittium) lies on a high loess bank of the Danube near the present-day village of Surduk. The site includes a fortification, a settlement and a necropolis, or burial ground.

At Čolićev Čot, a settlement lies next to a fortification. Finds identified above ground include Roman building debris, daub, glass, bones and fragments of Roman pottery. The categories of finds thus range from building material and pottery to glass and bones.

More recent history is also present at named locations. The Spomenik NOB-u (Svetionik) monument was erected in 1961 and is designated an immovable cultural asset of the category “significant site.” At Marinkovićev salaš in the Surduk area, Partisans met during the Second World War; the Podunavski partizanski odred unit was formed there. A monument erected in 1981 stands at the site.

How can you plan for wine and food in Surduk?

The restaurant at Vinarija Milanović is set amid a vineyard at a viewpoint above the Danube. Its menu is based on sharing dishes paired with wines from the wine cellar. The drinks selection is clearly defined: only Milanović wines, homemade juices and local rakija are served.

A restaurant visit and a wine tasting are two different occasions: visits to Vinarija for tastings can be arranged. The Slankamenka wine tour also visits Vinarija Milanović in Surduk. The tasting features the wines Neoplanta, Frankovka, Probus and Sila. The tour also follows the Danube bank by Slankamen and Surduk; its itinerary and availability must be arranged.

What other experiences are connected with the Danube riverbank?

Horizont Swimming & Spa is on the banks of the Danube and has five swimming pools. If you include the complex in your travel plans, confirm current operating details before your trip. This keeps this option clearly distinct from the historic sites and wine offerings.
