Juzna-Backa: Fortresses, Wetlands and Wine Tradition

Bač Fortress is a protected cultural monument of exceptional importance. The cultural landscape of Bač is shaped by the Danube, the Mostonga, wetlands, loess areas, alluvial forests, swamps and freshwater habitats. Since 2017, the Bačko Podunavlje Biosphere Reserve has been part of the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves. Bač Fortress, Bođani Orthodox Monastery and Bač Franciscan Monastery are three significant cultural assets of the cultural landscape of Bač that are central to understanding its history and character.

Bač Fortress can be reached from Bač via a paved pedestrian bridge, through the Varoš Gate and along Bačke tvrđave Street. By car, Bač Fortress can be reached via the Bač–Vajska road in the direction of the Donjon Tower.

The Kovilj–Petrovaradin Wetland comprises interconnected forest, meadow, wetland and aquatic ecosystems with river islands, ponds and wetlands. Rare black storks and white-tailed eagles can be found in the Kovilj–Petrovaradin Wetland. Kovilj is served by regular suburban bus line 24 from Novi Sad. The Kovilj–Petrovaradin Wetland lies along the Danube Cycle Route EuroVelo 6.

At the clock tower of Petrovaradin Fortress, the large hand shows the hours and the small hand shows the minutes. The main building of the Novi Sad City Museum in Petrovaradin Fortress features two permanent exhibitions: “The Fortress in the Past” and “Novi Sad from the 18th to the 20th Century”. The Underground Military Galleries are a four-level communication and defense system measuring 10 miles in length. The fortress terrace with the Officers’ Pavilion offers views of Novi Sad. The EXIT Festival takes place every July at Petrovaradin Fortress.

Atelier 61 is a workshop for large-format artistic tapestries founded in 1961, preserving the tradition of producing textile items. The Muzej vojvođanskih Slovaka (Múzeum vojvodinských Slovákov) houses historical, ethnological and art museum collections. Its aim is to research, document, present and preserve material and spiritual evidence from the past of the Vojvodina Slovaks.

The town center of Sremski Karlovci is a cultural and historical entity of exceptional importance. Sremski Karlovci was the seat of the Serbian Metropolitanate; Karlovci High School is considered the oldest higher-education institution of the Serbs. Wine production and wine tours are among the most important tourist offerings in Sremski Karlovci. The wine cellars of Sremski Karlovci offer optional tastings featuring the local winemaking tradition and Srem specialties such as a Srem snack, poppy-seed strudel or kuglof.
