Quick facts about Sremski Karlovci
The historic town centre of Sremski Karlovci is a cultural and historical entity of exceptional importance.
The “St. Nicholas Church” was built in 1762. The “Magistrate” was constructed between 1808 and 1811 in the Neoclassical style. The “Monastery of the Presentation of the Holy Virgin”, also known as the “Upper Church”, was built in 1746 on the foundations of an older church from the 16th century.
Which historic sites shape the visit?
The “Karlovci Grammar School” holds a special place. It was founded in 1791 as the first grammar school in Serbia. The building was designed by the Hungarian architect Đula Partoš; its design strongly resembles Studenica Monastery. The site thus combines an educational institution with a striking architectural reference.
The “Zavičajna zbirka Sremski Karlovci” is located in Ilion Palace. The palace was the former residence of the baronial Rajačić family. The collection includes archaeological, historical, ethnological and art collections. It also includes an exhibition about Branko Radičević. A reconstructed farmhouse kitchen illustrates rural life in Fruška Gora at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century.
The “Chapel of Peace” is also associated with a specific historic site: it was built in 1817 at the location where the Treaty of Karlowitz was signed in 1699 between the troops of the Christian Alliance and the Ottoman Empire. The combination of architectural history and European history makes it a distinct focus alongside churches and administrative buildings.
