Hotel in Zástranie: Nature and Culture at Straník

A yellow-marked hiking trail leads from Zástranie to Straník; the ascent takes approximately 1.5 hours. The route to the viewpoint leads uphill through forest switchbacks.

Nature

Straník is a 769 m-high mountain in the Kysucká vrchovina range, located 6 km east of Žilina. From the summit, there are views of the Malá Fatra, the Žilina Valley and Kysuce.

Trails

The yellow local cycling route 8458 also leads to the Straník viewpoint. It runs through Zástranie and then climbs to the summit of Straník. Known as the Teplička–Zástranie–Straník route, it is 5.4 km long and classified as an easy recreational mountain-bike route.

Culture

The tourist shelter and footbridge on Straník were officially opened on 9 April 2016 during the Žilinská 1000-ka event. Both received the 2016 CE.ZA.AR architecture award from the Slovak Chamber of Architects in the Outdoor Space category.

The archaeological site of the Straník hillfort has been protected as a registered cultural monument since 30 December 1967. Finds from various areas of the hillfort include artefacts from the Lusatian culture of the Early to Late Bronze Age, as well as from the Early to Late Iron Age. These also include finds from the Late La Tène period, known in northern Slovakia as the Púchov culture.

Zástranie is also home to the parish church of Sedembolestnej Panny Márie, which was consecrated in 2000.

The paragliding launch site is located approximately 1 km east of the village of Zástranie. Straník is now an important centre for paragliding and hang gliding. Alongside hiking and cycling, air sports are therefore also explicitly associated with the mountain and its surroundings.
