Žilina District: Hotels and Accommodation

Žilina District is located in the Žilina Basin. The city of Žilina lies in the Váh Valley, in the Žilina Basin landscape, at the confluence of the Váh, Kysuca and Rajčianka rivers. Žilina is an important railway and motorway junction. Žilina–Dolný Hričov International Airport serves the region in northwestern Slovakia.

Culture and History

Budatín Castle stands at the confluence of the Váh and Kysuca rivers. The exhibition “History of Žilina” is located on the castle’s third floor. In the centre of Žilina lies a heritage conservation area centred around Mariánske námestie, with its typical burgher houses.

Dom umenia Fatra is an Art Nouveau building formerly known as Grand Bio Univerzum. In 1921, it hosted the premiere of the first Slovak film, “Jánošík”. Rosenfeld Palace is a significant Art Nouveau monument from the early 20th century and is reminiscent of Vienna’s Belvedere Palace. Experts regard the Neological Synagogue as a unique architectural monument.

The Church of Saint Stephen the King in Dolné Rudiny is considered Žilina’s oldest monument; its oldest frescoes are almost 800 years old. The folk architecture exhibition in Čičmany comprises two wooden houses managed by the Považské múzeum: Radenov dom and Dom č. 42. The exhibition in Radenov dom presents stages of life, customs, work and occupational activities, food, the architecture of Čičmany, as well as clothing and textiles.

Wirecraft – craft and art – was added to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2019.

Strečno Castle is publicly accessible as a preserved medieval ruin and has been a national cultural monument since 1970. At Lietava Castle, fragments of František Thurzo’s Renaissance reconstruction dating from 1558 onwards have survived to this day, including arched attic walls and remnants of sgraffito decoration. The castle has been abandoned since the mid-18th century and deteriorated over 250 years into a structurally endangered condition; at the same time, it is a national cultural monument.

Thermal Water and Events

Rajecká thermal water is classified as natural healing water with a medium mineral content, as well as hydrogen carbonate-, calcium- and magnesium-containing water. Spa Aphrodite uses the medium-mineralized Rajecká thermal water for drinking cures, a tradition that historically dates back to the 19th century there.

The Aphrodite water world in Rajecké Teplice has indoor and outdoor pools that use natural healing thermal water with calcium and magnesium ions. Every year, the Transport Museum in Rajecké Teplice participates in preparing the Rajecká Anča event with a historic motor train and other transport technology.

Nature and Trails

Malá Fatra National Park is crisscrossed by numerous marked hiking trails, ranging from easy walks and ridge hikes to more demanding routes with chains and ladders. Jánošíkove diery, briefly called Diery, are a system of gorges and canyons in Krivánska Malá Fatra within the Rozsutec National Nature Reserve.

The Jánošíkove diery educational trail through Dolné diery and Nové diery includes waterfalls, ladders and wooden footbridges and is also suitable for families with children.

The educational trail begins in the Biely Potok district; parking is available in front of Hotel Diery.

The Rajecká Valley includes several smaller protected areas and biocentres with rare vegetation.
