Rudina – History, Culture and Landscape

Rudina is located on the northeastern edge of the Javorníky Mountains, in the valley of the Janinský Potok and above its confluence with the Kysuca River. This location combines a clearly defined landscape with a local history dating back to the La Tène period, complemented in present-day community life by culture and sport.

Landscape

The municipality of Rudina is predominantly wooded and hilly. Its elevation ranges from approximately 350 to 560 metres. Another characteristic feature is an almost 3-kilometre-long linear settlement structure along the Janinský Potok. The river course, topography and settlement pattern are therefore among the defining spatial features of the village.

History

The first written mention of Rudina dates back to 1359. The archaeological evidence reaches even further back: finds in the municipality of Rudina and its surroundings attest to settlement as early as the La Tène period. The two dates mark different aspects of the village’s history – the written mention of the place and the earlier settlement documented by archaeological finds.

Culture

Rudina’s religious architecture includes the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary. It was consecrated on 28 January 1995 and elevated to parish church status on 1 July 2004.

Rudina is also home to a chapel that was originally a Classicist bell tower from the early 19th century. Another historic memorial site is Rudina’s monument to those who fell in the First World War. It was erected in 1933 with a bust of M. R. Štefánik; a commemorative document was deposited beneath the bust.

Folklore is also part of the municipality’s cultural profile. The Dúbravka folklore group performs at all cultural and social events organised by the municipality of Rudina and represents the municipality at district competitions for singing groups. A folklore group also presents centuries-old village customs and makes them accessible to the younger generation.

Nature

Rudina’s natural monuments include the protected lime trees known as “Tri kopce”. Their protected status is just as much a part of the local natural heritage as the predominantly wooded and hilly structure of the municipality.

Sport and Transport

The Slovak UCI championships in trial cycling are held regularly in Rudina.

Rudina is well connected both by rail and road. By train, Rudina is 3 km from Kysucké Nové Mesto and 7 km from Žilina. Buses run regularly from Rudina to Kysucké Nové Mesto, from where travellers can continue towards Žilina or Čadca.
