Culture and History

Radoľa Castle is a Renaissance-style aristocratic residence and was probably originally protected by a fortification wall. The castle houses the permanent archaeological and historical exhibition “The Older History of Kysuce”. It has been open there since 1983 and was partially redesigned in 2002. The exhibition includes artefacts dating from the Palaeolithic to the Roman period.

The educational and historical trail in Radoľa, opened in 2014, is approximately 4 km long and passes places connected with the earliest settlement of the area. The trail is well marked with signposts and supplemented by information boards explaining the historical features of the respective locations.

Koscelisko near Radoľa is an archaeological site. The foundations of a masonry church that existed approximately from 1270 to 1429 were uncovered there. The Koscelisko terrace also provides evidence that people lived there as early as 3,000 to 4,000 years ago.

The historic centre of Kysucké Nové Mesto is the only preserved historic complex in Kysuce. In the middle of the historic square lined with arcades stands a sandstone statue of Saint John of Nepomuk dating from 1761. The Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary developed from a chapel whose construction began in 1738, was expanded from 1801, and was completed in 1817.

The tradition of Jakubovské hody in Kysucké Nové Mesto has existed since 1666 and continues to the present day. Kysucká hvezdáreň is a regional cultural institution that conducts professional observational activities in the field of astronomy. It introduces astronomy and related natural and technical sciences to a broad audience through various events.
