Michalovce leads to an area where cultural history, nature observation and designated routes come together. In Michalovce, the range extends from historic religious buildings and a noble residence to exhibitions, Kerta Park and a wetland of international importance.

Nature and routes

Zemplínska Šírava is connected to Michalovce by designated cycling routes. As early as 1965, it was included in category B of the list of internationally important areas for the protection of waterbirds in Europe and North Africa. The area has high scientific research value and is the subject of systematic ornithological research. A designated cycle route leads from Michalovce via Zemplínska Široká and Iňačovce to the Senianske rybníky and back via Senné and Palín to Michalovce.

Around 60 rare tree species grow in Kerta Nature Park, including a 370-year-old pedunculate oak. During its renewal, 1,920 metres of new paths, a pavilion, an entrance gate and two elements of a children's playground were added. The renovated Hrádok complex also has walking paths. Its other features include an amphitheatre with 400 seats, seating areas, a picnic area, a barbecue area and several children's play elements.

Culture

The permanent Klenotnica exhibition presents valuable art-historical, archaeological and numismatic artefacts in an interactive and modern way in the reconstructed central Baroque-Classical manor house. The pieces are connected with the manor house, the Sztáray family and the Zemplín region. In the oldest medieval rooms of the noble residence, the exhibition “Rytier Albert z Michaloviec” focuses on the life and times of the knight Albert of Michalovce, also known as Albert Užský and Albert Viniansky, who lived approximately from 1380 to 1434.

The archaeological exhibition arranges significant archaeological finds and assemblages chronologically. They concern the prehistoric, protohistoric, early historic and early medieval settlement of the Zemplín region. The ethnographic exhibition of the Zemplínske múzeum presents the pottery of Pozdišovce, the shepherds' art of southern Zemplín, traditional crafts, traditional ways of living, evidence of folk fishing and folk textiles.

The rotunda of Michalovce has a round nave and a horseshoe-shaped apse. It is regarded as evidence of the establishment of Christianity in the Zemplín region and is one of the city's oldest cultural and historical monuments. On the grounds of the Zemplínske múzeum at Kostolné námestie, the stone remains of a religious rotunda are located near a model. The Roman Catholic Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Michalovce has medieval origins; its oldest part dates from the 15th century.

Hrádok and places of learning

The artist Teodor Jozef Mousson lived in the villa at Hrádok from 1931 to 1944. He later had a studio added to its north side. The Mousson House at Hrádok, which now houses the Michalovce Observatory, was originally built for members of the Sztáray noble family. The neo-Gothic chapel, which serves as the Sztáray family crypt, also stands at Hrádok. It is regarded as a free copy of the Gothic Michael Chapel in Košice and was completed and consecrated in 1898.

The Krajská hvezdáreň in Michalovce is an astronomical centre for the Košice Region. Through educational science programmes, it seeks to bring children and adults closer to knowledge about astronomy, space travel and natural sciences. The “Spoznaj a foť” project provides for permanent information and educational panels outdoors at important cultural monuments in the city. Embedded QR codes are intended to provide information about the history of Michalovce.

Regional cuisine

At Zemplínske slávnosti 2025, the “Kulinársky raj Zemplína” offered a diverse range of food and drink. Thus, alongside the historical and nature-related sites, a regional festival with a culinary focus is also part of the documented events on offer.
